Visiting the Applegate Valley
Applegate Valley lies south of Grants Pass and west of Medford, separated from the greater Rogue River Valley area by wooded hills. Its major through road is the Jacksonville Highway (state route 238).
Sometimes called "bucolic" (a term the locals resent) the valley is largely rural and scenic in many areas. Natural ecologies of the area are complex and vary from flat or sloping pastures and farms to steep wooded gulches with rocky hilltops. Despite its rural nature (compared with the nearby Medford-Ashland and Grants Pass metro areas) there is much to do and see. From top quality eating establishments to comfortable lodging, to parks, ranches and wineries, there is enough to occupy a few days’ stay. Almost a hundred small businesses pepper the valley, serving locals and metro-dwelling visitors with equal ferver.
